The Tartu Art Museum is pleased to present the solo exhibition “Verbarium” by Krista Leesi. Visitors will be greeted by a world of patterns inspired mainly by Tartu but also by Paris and Tallinn. As the title suggests, the author uses nuanced wordplay to offer new interpretations to the Leaning Building of Barclay de Tolly, where the museum is located, the two-storey sheds, or “kallerei”, that are so characteristic of the city, the graffiti covered traffic signs of Tartu and Paris and other elements from urban environments.

Krista Leesi (b 1966) is an Estonian textile artist and designer and associate professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts’ Textile department, whose oeuvre is characterised by a clever conceptual union of language and visuals. Leesi’s interventions offer new and pointed meanings to familiar objects, images and environments. She finds an original way to join together the historical methods and practices of textile art, different materials and contemporary ideas. Her works lead the viewer to discover hidden meanings, to create connections between various narratives and to indulge in playful contemplations.

The technically adept execution and striking design language of Leesi’s oeuvre offer aesthetic experiences and practical aspects in parallel with gripping content. This is a magnificent example of the way the boundaries between design and contemporary art have become vague.  Leesi’s works are made unique by the fact that both art and design are equally important: they are highlighted successfully and with intensity.

Krista Leesi’s exhibition joins together two directions that are important to the Tartu Art Museum: exhibiting significant contemporary authors and presenting notable examples of design and applied arts to the public in southern Estonia. It is made even more noteworthy by Leesi’s skill and interest in approaching the exhibition with location-specific ideas, by joining Tartu to the wider context of her oeuvre and thereby adding it to her “world map”.

As part of the workshop, EKA students design shoes for children in an orphanage.

12 foreign students from 8 European countries from the departments of product design, jewelery, ceramics, architecture, graphic design, photography are participating, none of whom have made shoes before.

12 children of Tallinn Children’s Home are also learning to design and make shoes. The workshop also marks the 20th anniversary of the orphanage.
Supervisors are Kelian Luisk (EST), Macarena Gimenez (IT), Nicolas Denolle (FR)

Macarena Gimenez is an Argentine-Italian footwear maker with a studio in Denmark. Nicolas Denolle has long been a graphic designer for the world-famous brand Camper and now works for Apple. In this workshop, Denolle will guide the illustration.

The workshop takes place in two parts. For two days, students make shoes for the children and then illustrate them.

According to the color chart and the given theme, the students help the children to make designs for the shoes and then the children transfer their homemade drawings / motifs to their designed shoes.

This is an Erasmus workshop in the Accessory and Binding Design Department of EKA.

Estonian Academy of Arts is launching a new event series called ROHEKA which promotes green lifestyle and sustainable development topics in EKA. The series consists of one-day events taking place once a month, focussing on important topics like waste management, sustainable learning, community, work environment, energy efficiency, etc.

The first event of ROHEKA series will take place this Wednesday, September 1, when EKA will introduce its sustainability principles and share tips for sorting physical and digital waste.

The day starts at 10am with presentations, continues with a playful online waste-quiz and ends with collective cleaning in EKA building. The first half of the event will take place digitally and will be broadcast on EKA TV. Collective cleaning, starting at 12.30, takes place all over the house. We’ll gather in EKA courtyard.

??? Summer School is a week-long experimental workshop with a focus on type design and typography, taking place on August 15-22 in the beautiful countryside of Oandu village, Lahemaa National Park, Estonia.

Typography is often closely related to the urban environment but ??? Summer School aims at finding new methods and inspiration in the practice of typography by experimenting with it in rural Estonia.

??? Summer School is being held for the 2nd time and the theme of 2021 is: GRAVITY.

We welcome graphic designers, artists, architects, theorists, critics, curators and everyone else interested to participate.

Our tutors are Laura Linsi & Roland Reemaa (UK/EST) and César Rogers (FRA/NL) + guest lecturers.

At Triin Kukk’s „Lost and Found” exhibition at Hop Gallery, the young jewellery artist contemplates the situation where something might be excluded from our focus and when emerging again in our perceptive field this something might bring out something new.

Neon markers on asphalt; concealing and embellishing textile cover on construction sites; disconnected pipes; threaded rod and concrete. Various objects and phenomena are surrounding us between these temporary landscapes – trivial things that have become almost invisible.

Current exhibition presents objects made of stones, referring to various things that the artist coincidentally started to notice only several years ago, things that in their random form may be left unnoticed. Through the process of engraving the material, the rocks have lost their rigidity and transformed into flexible objects irrelevant to their original material. These artworks can be considered to be fossils from the future, surrounding the viewer as some kind of shadow objects.

The focus of Triin Kukk’s artwork lies on observation of the everyday and discovering something new in it. The artist is intrigued by vague shifts and emphasizing the secondary aspects. During the recent years, Triin Kukk has been used natural minerals and applies different techniques in her artistic practice.

The event consists of public lectures, consultations and a workshop for drafting a doctoral thesis. The event will once again bring together experts in creative research with those interested in entering doctoral studies in art and design.

Tuesday, 15.06. 14:00-15:00 – Mick Wilson

Mick Wilson is an artist, educator, and researcher. He is currently Professor of Art and Director of Doctoral Studies at HDK-Valand Academy of Art & Design, University of Gothenburg. He has been actively involved in developing and promoting artistic research on the academic, institutional, and public levels. His current research deals with questions of art as public culture; political community with the dead; exhibition-making as inquiry; and the rhetorical dynamics of knowledge conflict and symbolic violence. His co-edited volumes include: How Institutions Think (2017) and The Curatorial Conundrum (2016), both MIT and with Paul O’Neill and Lucy Steeds, and SHARE Handbook for Artistic Research Education (2013), ELIA with Schelte van Ruiten. Wilson is currently involved in projects like PARSE On the Question of Exhibition (2020-2021), Open Up (2019-2023), and Public Art Research Report II (2020-2022).

In his lecture entitled “Meeting Friends and Parting Ways,” Mick Wilson will give a personal exploration of the potentials and tensions of the artistic research field based on his collaborative experience as an artist, writer, researcher, and organizer.

Tuesday, 15.06. 17:00-18:00 – Britta Benno

Britta Benno is a Tallinn-based artist who specializes in drawing and printmaking. She is interested in various hybrid techniques and materials that open up new perspectives. In recent years Benno has been working on a series depicting posthuman urban landscapes. Her conceptual keywords include memory, power, and loss of meaning (ruins), imagination (worlding), printmaker’s tools of thought (thinking in layers), and posthuman philosophy.

Since 2018 Benno is a doctoral student on the EKA art and design doctoral curriculum. Her practice-based research focuses on thinking in layers and imagining in layers inherent to her medium: posthuman landscapes in the field of extended drawing and printmaking. In her lecture, she will present her research, shed light on how it has evolved and changed during the studies, and how the academic and artistic practices work together.

Wednesday, 16.06. 16:00-17:30 – Thomas Markussen & Eva Knutz

Thomas Markussen is associate professor and co-founder of the Social Design Research Unit at the University of Southern Denmark. In his work, Markussen focuses on how design can be used as a political and critical aesthetic practice, notably in social design, design activism, and design fiction.

Eva Knutz is an artist and designer, an associate professor within practice-based design research, and co-founder of the Social Design Research Unit at the University of Southern Denmark. The group works on participatory design processes leading to social value for the individual and society at large, with particular attention to marginalized or vulnerable groups in society. Knutz has a developed number of prototypes (games) and research artifacts (probes, self-aid kits, tools) focusing on two large public sectors, healthcare, and criminal care.

Markussen’ and Knutz’ shared lecture is titled “Practice-based research in art and design – an introduction”.

Consultations and Workshop: June 16-17

In addition to the lectures, individual consultations take place within the framework of the PhD Vitamin on June 16. They offer the opportunity to talk about artistic work and ideas for a doctoral thesis with an expert of your choice. On June 17, the workshop about ideation and preparation for one’s PhD proposal with Thomas Markussen and Eva Knutz will take place. To take part in the workshop, please provide a 1-pager of your idea. Instructions can be found on the registration form.

PhD Vitamin was first initiated in 2020 by the Faculty of Fine Arts. In 2021, it is being organized as a collaboration between the faculties of fine art, design and the EKA doctoral school.

PhD Vitamin is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.

“Fantasmagooria” is a group exhibition by Design & Crafts MA students of the Estonian Academy of Arts coming from five different countries from all over the world.

The exhibition will take place at Manufactory Quarter event hall on 29.05-19.06.2021, and as a part of the satellite programme of the Tallinn Applied Arts Triennial it reflects upon the main topic of this year’s event: translucency.

The etymology of the term phantasmagoria can be found in the ancient Greek: phantasma, which means phantom, apparition, and agora meaning gathering or assembly. “Fantasmagooria” brings together artists and designers with diverse backgrounds (ceramic, glass, jewellery, metal etc); showcasing an eclectic combination of media that aim to establish a fertile dialogue between disciplines. The works dwell in the space reconnecting past and present, celebrating the decay that gives room for new growth.

Under this perspective the show unravels narratives that tackle contemporary social issues and dystopian scenarios. What is familiar shows its hidden content, highlighting uncanny aspects of our society and anthropocentric view. Iron angels, sugar coated thornes, gender equality, delicate layering of fragile materials, imaginary objects that trigger a sense of wonder. Shining a light upon what usually stays secretive, the works accompany the viewer on a journey between mist and light.

Dila is a Ph.D. student at the Estonian Academy of Arts. She is working in the field of interactive textiles, bodily engagements, soma design, and somaesthetics. She will be presenting her first case study on the 14th of May. Her first design case titled “SQUEAKY/PAIN” is an inquiry into the possibilities of wearable interactive textiles to facilitate somaesthetic awareness through movement-based bodily interactions. The project utilizes bodily disturbances as a design material for bodily engagements, specifically, pain is adopted as a bodily disturbance in this design case. “SQUEAKY/PAIN” is the name of the interactive wearable artifact that externalizes pain by mimicking its qualities. With this project, Dila is exploring the ways of promoting somaesthetic awareness via sensory bodily interactions by mimicking the pain experience. The research question of the project is:

How pain can be externalized through interactive textiles and how interactive textiles that externalize pain can facilitate somaesthetic awareness?
