As part of the joint subject of the Faculty of Fine arts and the Faculty of Architecture “Commissioned Monument in an Urban Environment”, solutions were sought for the problem of a monument of national importance in public urban space.
The partner of the course was SA Head of State August Rei, who proposed to capture the memory of August Rei, a statesman who played a central role in the creation, development and maintenance of the continuity of the Estonian state, but has been little known to the public. The goal was to propose a location and a design for a memorial to August Rei.
Two-member groups formed by students of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture participated in the creation of the memorial.
The focus was on finding a modern installation-architectural solution that spoke to people. To this end, the students analyzed and experimented with possible location options in the urban space of Tallinn. The memorial could have been proposed in the form of any public space object – a work of art, installation or architectural environment, as well as a park or fountain.
The students were supervised by Andres Ojari, Toomas Tammis, Kirke Kangro and Taavi Talve.
During the teamwork stage, the course participants competed for financial prizes, which were presented by Head of State August Rei SA.
The works were evaluated by a committee consisting of Jaak Juske, Hanno Matto, Tarvo Sarmet from the Head of State August Rei SA and Sten Saarits, Martin Melioranski, Kirke Kangro, Toomas Tammis and Andres Ojari from the Estonian Academy of Arts.
Two main prizes of €1,000 and three 2nd place prizes (€500 each) were awarded for the best works.
