Studies in Animation department

The MA studies are largely theoretical lectures and mentorships as part of the main studies, alongside a variety of practical workshops to gain technical skills. The BA program is only offered in Estonian. To view the BA program information please switch to the Estonian.

MA programme

MA in EKA Animation is international and in English. Every student makes 2 artistic projects in 2 years, on of which one is their animated graduate film, the other may be an artistic project of any artistic practice (exhibition, interactive art piece, app, etc) so long as it is related to animation. For their graduate film they are free to choose the techniques and materials of their choice, and are expected to be the scriptwriter, director, artist an animator of the film. It is allowed to have technical help.


Theoretical courses

The aim of the theoretical courses is to examine and engage with animation in depth as an art form, not only in its common form as film and in the cinema, but also the role it can play in making fine art and in gallery spaces.

Workshops

Each semester there are at least two weeks dedicated to practical workshops in which students can gain skills and knowledge on different animation techniques and other artistic practices. The chosen workshops are flexible and often adapt to the needs of the students.

The goal of the curriculum

— To provide an academic education in animation, and training for work as a director of animated films, or as a member of the creative team in an animation studio

— To create a systematic concept of the nature of animated films, and of the application possibilities of animated films as a specific media form

— To prepare students for scientific research in the field of animation

— To teach practical skills for working in fields related to animated films: scriptwriting & storyboarding, editing, film sound design, directing

— To create a new academic generation for schools of higher education in Estonia abroad
