The Reverse Garden is a new kind of food production system, invented in collaboration between the Estonian Academy of Arts and Natufia Labs. It was built as a result of a series of workshops for the Tallinn Architectural Biennale 2015.
The garden brings together living plants, technology and design thinking in order to produce food at the spot where the food consumers live – in the city centre. The garden combines hydroponics, practical knowledge of upside-down gardening, and automated machinery for creating a hassle-free system that requires very little space, no natural light, water or soil.
The original idea of the installation was formed during the “Fluid Form” workshop, led by Renee Puusepp in the Department of Architecture at the Estonian Academy of Arts. During the workshop, teams of architecture students explored parametric modelling techniques and hydroponics in collaboration with Natufia Labs. One of the early physical prototypes produced by students was selected for the TAB-LAB installation. Soon after the selection of the idea, artists from the Department of Ceramics joined the team too.
