Rummu Quarry

Supervised by Peeter Pere

Spring term of Year 2

The second-year students’ spring term studio project focussed on the small town Rummu, or rather the surroundings of the former limestone quarry, the present lake, former prison and limestone screenings hill.

Owing to its clear water and intriguing underwater tracts, the reservoir in the south of the town has become a favourite of local divers. It is not a scenic natural landscape in the traditional sense of the word. In summer, the rough conditions at the foot of the “ash hill” pockmarked by erosion attract countless diving, swimming and climbing enthusiasts with the burgeoning military-themed beach life providing a highly inspiring environment. In contrast to the bustling beach life in the summer, the town struggles with unemployment and abandoned blocks of flats with the residents gradually leaving the area.

The studio project was looking for means to find an upturn to the gradual fall. What could be the spatial means to make the unique area attractive to new residents, what could be the activities enticing visitors and make also the passing tourists decide to stay for a while?
