Hilkka Hiiop Elected as New EKA Rector

Hilkka Hiiop was elected as the new Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts with fifty-two votes. Eighty-five members of the electoral body participated in the elections held on Friday, January 31, 2025. Hilkka Hiiop was elected as EKA Rector in the first round of voting. The electoral body that made the decision consisted of members of the EKA Council and Senate, professors, department heads, members of the student council and representatives of the art community. Jüri Kermik, Chairman of the Rector’s Election Committee, said: “The new EKA Rector is a person who knows the Academy of Arts in depth. As a collective, we are excited to see how the new Rector will develop the already high-ranking academy to new heights.” Hilkka Hiiop has been the Dean of the EKA Faculty of Art and Culture since 2021. Hiiop is a professor in the Academy’s Department of Heritage Preservation and Conservation. Hiiop’s candidacy was nominated by the Faculty of Art and Culture and members of the EKA Council. Hilkka Hiiop’s five-year term as EKA Rector will begin on April 4, 2025, with the oath of office before the Council and Senate.
