Curriculum

The painting department at EKA is focused on developing artists’ individual practices and work; the ability to see, search and direct attention. One of the aims of the painting department is the development of each student’s individual approach. Starting from the second semester of the first year, students work together in a shared studio space and focus on the subjects that are specifically important to them. Their studio practice receives individual feedback and the students are guided by various lecturers from the department of painting as well as the broader faculty of fine arts. Additionally, every semester sees courses given by external lecturers from Estonia and abroad. The lecturers include painters as well as sculptors, curators, theorists, writers and gallerists. These meetings are important for the development of critical thinking and artistic practices.

Bachelor’s studies focus more on the medium of painting, starting with the traditions of painting, in theory as well as in practice. In addition to subjects on the theory of painting, bachelor’s studies also include broader lectures on art history, philosophy and critical thinking, the bases of creative industry, aesthetics and visual culture. Starting from the second semester of the first year, each semester ends with an exhibition project, which provides students the experience of presenting their work in an exhibition setting.

The painting department does not specifically offer a master’s programme, but students can continue their studies in the contemporary art programme, which focuses on supporting students as they develop into independent, capable and diverse artists. While students are welcome to continue working with their chosen medium, feedback is inter-departmental. The programme gives students the tools to traverse international contemporary art and be aware of its current intellectual questions. In addition to students’ individual practices, the programme includes group discussions and the critical analysis of artworks in the form of seminars and as part of practical work. Students are actively introduced into the art scene and their participation in thematic group exhibitions is promoted alongside their individual projects.
