Visiting Professors of EKA Doctoral School are esteemed scholars or artistic researchers who work closely with PhD students from one curriculum and are appointed for one academic year. After Rolf Hughes (2019–2020) and Danielle Wilde (2020–2021), EKA Docotral School has appointed Maarit Mäkelä (Aalto University) and Mika Elo (University of the Arts in Helsinki) as Visiting Professors for 2021–2022. They will conduct series of intensive seminars over two semesters and give feedback for doctoral students in Art and Design programme, focusing on how to choose and apply research methods for creative projects and combine artistic practice with writing. In case of vacancies, other EKA PhD students can also apply for participation in the seminars.
Maarit Mäkelä has background in design and design research. Her research interests lie in materiality, especially in the context of artistic and practice-led research. She is the initiator of “The Art of Research” conference in Aalto University and co-editor of the anthologies “The Art of Research: Research Practices in Art and Design” (2006) and “The Art of Research II: Process, Results and Contribution” (2012). Maarit Mäkelä works as the Associate Professor for Design, especially Practice-led Design Research, at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
Mika Elo is a curator, visual artist and researcher whose research interests include theory of photographic media, philosophical media theory, and epistemology of artistic research. He co-curated the Finnish exhibition “Falling Trees” at the Venice Biennale in 2013 and led the Research Pavilion #3 project in Venice (2018–2019). Currently he is leading one of the research projects in the consortium “Post-digital Epistemologies of the Photographic Image”. He is also a member of the editorial boards of tiede&edistys (since 2010), RUUKKU (since 2012) and JAR (2010–2019). He currently works as the professor of artistic research at the University of the Arts Helsinki.
The seminar series will guide the doctoral students through the different spaces that an art/artistic research/design process needs to inhabit. These spaces (studio, workshop, field, seminar, exhibition, etc.) are incongruent and need to be inhabited in accordance with the logic required by each specific space. To highlight this idea, Donna Haraway’s emphasis on situatedness of knowledge and Hans-Jörg Rheinberger’s analysis of “experimental systems” will be used, among others, as points of reference.
