Admission of War Refugees to MA and BA Curricula

EKA (Estonian Academy of Arts) allowed extended admissions for Ukrainian war refugees to our English-language MA curricula. Ukrainian students admitted in the academic years 2022/2023 and 2023/24 were exempt from tuition fees.

Additional admissions were not opened for Ukrainian students to Estonian-language curricula (the remaining MA curricula and all BA curricula) since a prerequisite for studying these curricula is knowledge of the Estonian language at the B2 level.

Support for Ukraine from EKA

– The EKA leadership decided to support Ukrainian students on February 22, 2022.
– On February 25, 2022, we opened free mover study places for students in Ukraine and quickly got private donors who helped us pay for their accommodation.
– On March 1, 2022, we opened the EKA Fund for Ukrainian students, and the amount collected from donations was distributed as scholarships to our Ukrainian students and also covered additional accommodation expenses.
– The purpose of distributing scholarships is to help these young people economically with their primary personal needs.

After the first application period, 19 art and architecture students began their studies at EKA, and thanks to the cooperation of private donors and university partner networks, we were able to ensure a smoother acclimatisation.

Thanks to the successful raising of the issue in EKA partner networks like KUNO, NBAA, CIRRUS, etc., we had the opportunity to offer a Nordplus scholarship for the period May-August 2022 to all Ukrainian students who began their studies at EKA in March.

– Starting from the autumn of 2022, we offered all our joined Ukrainian students the opportunity to continue their studies in the 2022/2023 academic year with an Erasmus+ scholarship. We also opened an intensive Estonian language course from September 2022.
– In 2022, EKA joined the circle of partners in the first ELIA UAx project, and our partners became the Lviv Academy of Arts and the Kharkiv Academy of Arts.
– In the spring of 2023, high-level delegations from the Lviv and Kharkiv Academies of Arts visited us to familiarize themselves with EKA’s curricula and discuss further cooperation.
– In the autumn of 2023, Britta Benno and Anne Pikkov started working as mentors in the UAx program.
– In the 2023/24 academic year, 12 ERASMUS program students from the Lviv and Kharkiv Academies of Arts are studying at EKA.
– In the autumn-winter of 2023, the EKA delegation: Andres Tammsaar, Mihkel Ilus, Rebecca Duclos, and David Ross visited the Lviv Academy of Arts. Before Christmas, we sent generators and necessary information technology for teaching to both academies with the support of the EKA Ukraine support fund.
– In the spring-winter of 2024, the ERASMUS BIP course Following Loss dedicated to Ukraine’s losses will take place at EKA.
– EKA continues cooperation with Ukrainian partners and the Ukrainian community in various projects and initiatives.

SUPPORTERS

Upon the arrival of the students, it was necessary to quickly find all the necessary basic goods for the students, and many volunteers from the EKA community and several companies came to our aid. We thank all the supporters!
