The focus of the 5th semester studio project was the historic Yacht Club Kalev main building, built by the project of Peeter Tarvas, as well as its surroundings. Yacht Club Kalev is one of the oldest and biggest in Estonia, founded on the 8th of February 1948. Yacht Club Kalev (KJK) is the home harbour for about 150 small crafts and several dozen guest boats, currently it has over 600 active members. From 1977 Yacht Club Kalev has its own sailing sports school with approximately 85 students. Rein Ottoson’s sailing sports school is also active on the club’s territory.
One of the main goals of Yacht Club Kalev is to act as an organisation promoting sailing and connecting sailing enthusiasts. Additionally, over the years the club has hosted many competitions bringing thousands of people on the club territory. The goal for the semester’s project was to analyse the planning and spatial needs of the yacht club, to consider the club’s privacy questions regarding the surrounding city environment and to find out the future needs and potentials of a territory with such specific needs.
The end goal for the project is a spatial vision for the territory and potential new building(s) of the Yacht Club Kalev, from which the organisation could benefit to make the development decisions of the spatial area.
