The Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Kumasi to strengthen their existing partnership.

KNUST’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Asamoah, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in realizing the university’s vision, which focuses on relationships with both local and international partners. “We hope for a long-term and sustainable cooperation that will benefit both universities,” he noted.

Professor Daniel Duah, Dean of the International Programmes Office at KNUST, highlighted the already existing close cooperation between the two institutions. “Formalizing the relationship with a memorandum was an important step to establish a broader collaboration,” he said.

EKA’s Rector, Professor Mart Kalm, acknowledged KNUST’s high-quality art education and the passionate and quality work of its students. He also shared positive feedback from Estonian students who have previously participated in workshops and programs at KNUST. “This memorandum is a good start to deepen our cooperation,” stated Professor Kalm.

The long-term collaboration between the two universities began in 2019. Since then, many EKA students and lecturers have taught and studied in Ghana. Additionally, several KNUST lecturers have visited Estonia, and currently, a KNUST student is enrolled in EKA’s Master’s program in Fine Arts for a semester-long exchange.

The cooperation has been fully funded by the Erasmus+ program, providing diverse experiences for students and lecturers and promoting international educational and research collaboration.

Priority in the European Union: Sustainable Development and Cooperation with Africa

The cooperation memorandum with KNUST contributes to the European Union’s priorities in collaboration with Sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on human development, education, climate change, and sustainable development. Within the framework of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy, there is an emphasis on increasing youth participation, promoting culture and education, and implementing environmental sustainability principles.

The collaboration between EKA and KNUST exemplifies the implementation of EU priorities by enhancing youth skills development, educational mobility, and intercultural understanding.
