Design & Crafts

Design and Crafts MA programme is no longer accepting new students. Please find the new programme called Craft Studies MA here: https://artun.ee/craft-studies

The Estonian Academy of Arts Design and Crafts MA programme prepares students as creative practitioners and critical thinkers able to advance in their professional practice by holding agency to effect positive and responsible change. The programme highlights the importance of seamlessly combining traditional craft to contemporary practices and advanced technologies as a means to push forward the boundaries between design, crafts and arts, challenging our current understanding of the fields. The students enter a common programme but also select a speciality: Ceramics, Glass, Jewellery and Blacksmithing, Textile Design, Accessory Design or Fashion Design.

Within the institution’s environment, students are invited to discover studios and workshops beyond their specialisation, confronting traditional notions of discipline and creative practice. With the support of a highly skilled body of lecturers and tutors, and a low student/tutor ratio, students receive personalised feedback and guidance to experiment and excel in their fields of interest. Additionally, exposure to renowned practitioners and researchers in design and crafts – through lectures and workshops –, added to international exchange and internship, provides students with a great opportunity to develop their career both locally and internationally.

While students that start their studies in the Design and Crafts programme will be linked to their field, the curriculum invites them to interact across the different specializations offered as to create their own journeys. With a strong belief in the value of material-based design and indigenous knowledges, the Estonian Academy of Arts is proud to offer a degree in fields such as ceramics, glass, jewellery and blacksmithing, textile design, accessory design, fashion design. Each of these specialities have a unique outlook and philosophy, and the Estonian Academy of Arts is one the few places in the world where it is possible to study in some of these fields at MA level.

The programme, delivered in English, runs in tandem with the existing Disain ja rakenduskunst programme delivered in Estonian.
