The objective of the Numbers and Cognition in the Urban Environment course is to get closer to a representation of the city that stems from the individual, and developing a deeper understanding of what a given indicator means in an urban analysis. The course is structured on architecture, numbers and sensibility with the focus mainly on public space. Modern architecture is interwoven with numbers, which play an important role in the source material, tools and results. Properties that are quantified in architecture include dimensions of rooms, load-bearing capacity of walls, amount of natural light and user frequency – and this must all be synthesized and combined in the project. It can confidently be asserted that most architects use a computer in their professional work, and keying in numbers is an important method in their practice. The course will be taught by Raul Kalvo (an architect who has been engaged in building analytical models of cities and the application of those models) and Mikk Meelak (founder of Platvorm and an architect interested in meshing physical and digital space). The general deadline for registration for the 2017 Tallinn Summer Academy of Art, Design and Architecture – Edge/Blurring Boundaries ended on 5 June. However, the deadline for two Summer Academy courses has been extended: Telling Stories: Language in Video & Video as Language and Numbers and Cognition in the Urban Environment are open for registration until 18 June at artun.ee/summeracademy.
The TELLING STORIES – Language in Video & Video as Language course focuses on the use of narration in moving images. How do contemporary video artists use narration? Which modes of story telling are available to video authors? Which part does editing play in the process of telling a story? The course will be led by Clemens Wilhelm, a multi-media-artist based in Berlin who works mainly in video and photography. His works are shown internationally in institutions and festivals such as Centre Pompidou Paris (F), CFCCA Manchester (UK), Times Museum Guangzhou (CN), Loop Festival Barcelona (ESP), WRO 15th Media Art Biennale Wroclaw (PL), Stuttgarter Filmwinter (D), and Anthology Film Archives New York City (USA). In 2014 he won the First Prize of the Now & After Video Art Festivals Moscow for his film PETER IS DEAD. He received the TATE Artist Rooms Joseph-Beuys-Scholarship (2015), the Lo Schermo dell’Arte/Visio Scholarship (2012) and the Pepinieres Europeennes Scholarship (2010-11). He was artist in residence at Organhaus Art Space Chongqing (CN), SIM Reykjavik (IS), Buitenwerkplaats Amsterdam (NL), SUMU Turku (FI), LKV Trondheim (NO), FUTURA Prague (CZ), and Timespan Helmsdale (UK).
