Andres Alver

Andres Alver, born in Tartu in 1953, studied architecture at the Estonian SSR State Art Institute (ERKI) in 1972–1977, then worked in the design office of the Kirov Fisherman’s Collective until 1990, when he and his colleagues formed his own architectural firm Alver Trummal Arhitektid which operated until 2006. Since then he has been working in his own architectural office. Andres Alver has taught at the Academy of Arts since 1985, the last ten years as a professor. He has also taught at the College of Architecture of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the Department of Architecture at Umea University and the Faculty of Architecture at RISEBA Private University in Riga. Andres Alver has won the Kristjan Raud Art Prize (1981) and the Estonian Young Architect Prize (1988), and has also been a laureate of all-Union architectural competitions (1981 and 1987). He has been a laureate of the Cultural Endowment’s annual award four times (1999, 2000, 2005, 2009) and nominated for the Estonian National Culture Award (2001), the Mies van der Rohe European Architecture Award (2001, 2002) and the European Public Urban Architecture Award (2010, finalist). In 2015, the Alver office was also awarded the main prize of the national wooden architecture competition. In 2020, Andres Alver was awarded the 4th class Order of the White Star.
