Kristina Jõekalda is senior researcher at the Institute of Art History and Visual Culture, and associate professor at the Doctoral School. Her research focuses on the history of art historiography and heritage preservation in the 19th and 20th centuries in the context of nationalism studies. She has published articles and organised conferences on these topics. She has edited the volumes European Peripheries of Architectural Historiography (with Petra Brouwer; special issue of The Journal of Architecture, 2020), A Socialist Realist History? Writing Art History in the Post-War Decades (with Krista Kodres and Michaela Marek; Böhlau, 2019), and Debating German Heritage: Art History and Nationalism during the Long Nineteenth Century (with Kodres; special issue of Kunstiteaduslikke Uurimusi / Studies on Art and Architecture, 2014).
She has been awarded prizes and scholarships, lately e.g. the Juris Padegs Fellowship by Yale University; the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS) Dissertation Grant Award, and the Erich und Lisbeth Böckler-Stipendium by the Böckler-Mare-Balticum Foundation (which enabled her to work as visiting fellow at the Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).
She teaches courses relating to her research field, as well as general courses about academic writing (PhD, MA), incl. in the context of artistic and practice based research. On the latter topic she offers consultations to PhD students.
