The healthcare sector, consuming a significant amount of resources and generating various types of waste, has become a public health concern in itself, especially with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Using the example of the disposal of single-use face masks and rapid tests, the offered international course focused on how the healthcare sector could implement some of the most basic measures, such as introducing sustainable waste reduction and management strategies, to become greener and more environmentally sustainable.
A 5-day intensive course is being conducted at the North Estonia Regional Hospital, during which the principles of design thinking are effectively applied in healthcare planning, as evidenced by projects addressing intra-hospital challenges. Stakeholders from the public sector are also involved in the project, aligning efforts towards enhanced healthcare services. The project contributes to a practical approach, involving participation in operations and in-depth interviews. This collaborative and innovative methodology serves as a valuable model for future healthcare planning and service design initiatives.
By actively addressing real healthcare issues, students gain practical experience. This hands-on approach deepens the understanding of design students, honing their problem-solving skills and providing them with tangible knowledge from the field.
