On August 29, 2024, the opening event of the Estonian Academy of Arts’ (EKA) entrepreneurship platform LAETUS of the new academic season took place in the EKA Gallery. The Faculty of Design of EKA invited and started cooperation with 7 companies and organizations. Bank of Estonia, Granitop OÜ, Hiieko AS, Sydney Estonian House, Tallinn Strategy Center, Elering AS and Integration Foundation were represented.
The LAETUS program helps entrepreneurs and other partners to create practical and innovative solutions. The best-known example is the world-famous Huum sauna heater, which was created in cooperation between Huum and EKA students. A recent example is the “Youth Center of the Year 2023” recognition, modeled in cooperation with Toila municipality, and built in a sea container.
Karin Kiigemägi, EKA’s Collaboration and Project Coordinator: “Today, most companies are thinking about how to reuse production waste as much as possible. This is also an aspect in which the students of the Academy of Arts can be called upon to help, through the business cooperation program LAETUS.”
Students who work with LAETUS partners learn to become professional designers under experienced instructors. The program functions as an innovation laboratory where ideas are developed and solutions are offered. Together we consider needs, analyze user experiences, conduct identity analysis, work through idea solutions and much more.
“During the work, where we cut out stone tiles for kitchens or bathrooms, 400,000 tons of production waste is generated annually. Our expectation is that we will be able to put less marble into the crusher by the end of this year. Let’s see what we can do,” said the representative of Granitop OÜ.
At LAETUS, we apply new generation design, use a creative approach, take into account the principles of sustainability and human friendliness, but we also keep in mind that the solutions we create are commercially successful and go hand in hand with new technologies.
