Dolores Hoffmann's stained glass window in Batumi, Georgia
The project focuses on the fate and status of monumental works created by Dolores Hoffmann, one of the founders and long-time faculty members of the Monumental Painting Department at the Estonian SSR State Art Institute, and her students, including Urve Dzidzaria and other renowned female artists, outside of Estonia. This is a topic that has not been scientifically explored before, but it holds a significant place in our art history. It is important to map both the surviving and the already destroyed works (based on interviews with the artists and archival materials) and then document the remaining and accessible pieces, assessing their condition and conservation needs. As far as is known, the works of Estonian female artists can be found in Finland, Sweden, Japan, former Soviet republics, and possibly elsewhere. In each country, the project plans to involve local research institutions and organizations (e.g., the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, local heritage boards, etc.).
In the first phase of the project, an interview will be conducted with Dolores Hoffmann.
