This research theme deals with contemporary picture analysis and current issues in visual culture. It focuses on the factors influencing the use and reception of images, the role of visuality in contemporary society, and the links between visual culture and other cultural fields. It links visual culture studies with semiotics, representation theory and phenomenological aesthetics.
The theme grew out of a series of events on environmental aesthetics and semiotics titled “Place and Location” (1998-2010).
