SENSORY DESIGN (EKA Creative Research Grant 2021-2023)

The project provides a great opportunity to address social, cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability through the integration of creativity and science in Abram’s more-than-human world. The project explores sensory design in the context of recent achievements in neuroscience, human-computer interaction, and smart textiles. Through practice-based research, body-centered sensory applications are developed to:
  1. alter people’s perception of themselves and their bodies,
  2. encourage and enhance playful learning,
  3. mediate sensory experience through movement,
  4. improve/facilitate digital communication.
More broadly, this project provides an opportunity to discuss people’s bodily sensations or syndromes and guide them towards better health and choices. For example, a dress that helps the wearer feel good without the praise of a mirror or onlooker can replace several fast fashion products with a large environmental footprint (Magic Lining). Scientifically, it has been shown that when a person feels better physically, their behavior tends to shift in that direction (Magic Shoes).
