Academic Leave and Extension
Every student has the right to take a voluntary academic leave once during the entire period of studies starting from the second semester. You can go on voluntary academic leave for up to one year. If you have taken the academic leave for a shorter period (for one semester), you can apply for an extension before the leave expires.
Applications for voluntary academic leave can be submitted twice a year before the start of the semester pursuant to the deadline set in the academic calendar.
Additional academic leave may be granted:
- to care for a child until the child is 3 years old;
- for up to two years for health reasons;
- for up to one year to serve in the Defence Forces.
A copy of the child’s birth certificate, doctor’s certificate or the draft notice must be attached to the application.
Applications with relevant documentation need to be submitted on Tahvel. If you are unable to submit your application on Tahvel, you can submit the relevant application form by email.
The deadlines for submitting applications are indicated in the academic calender.
Academic leaves end automatically. If you wish to terminate your leave, please submit the relevant application to the study specialist.
Students who go on academic leave having studied for half of the semester or more are considered to have attended studies during the semester, and are obligated to compensate for the tuition costs for this semester. Therefore, students are advised to take a leave for a full semester or academic year. This is also the best option in terms of continuing studies placed on hold for the duration of the academic leave.
Students on academic leave are not eligible to apply for student loans and scholarships.
NB! Taking an academic leave will result in the revocation of the temporary residence permit (TRP) for studies for non-EU students.
STUDYING DURING ACADEMIC LEAVE
Students will have the right to attend courses during their academic leave and, for that, they have to add the relevant application from containing the list of courses to the main application on Tahvel before the semester begins.
Fee-paying students can only eliminate their academic arrears during their leave and there is no fee for eliminating academic arrears. Fee-paying students are also exempt from paying the tuition fee during their leave.
Students on academic leave for health reasons do not have the right to participate in studies, or sit for examinations and other tests.
NB! Study plans of students on academic leave will be cancelled on Tahvel.
EXTENSION OF STUDIES
Students who have not completed the curriculum 100% by the end of the standard period of studies can apply to extend their studies for a maximum of two semesters (12 months). This way, the study time does not increase, and the student is considered to have exceeded the standard study period. Students can apply to extend their studies by the deadline indicated in the academic calendar.
NB! Extension of studies comes with a fee of 500 Euros per semester.
