Käesoleva nädala kolmapäeval, 19.03.2014.a algusega kell 16.00 toimub Disaini- ja arhitektuurigaleriis (Pärnu mnt 6) kunsti ja disaini eriala doktorant Varvara Guljajeva doktoritöö “Unaware Participation in Art” juurde kuuluva installatsiooni “Reisiv kala” (“A Travelling Fish”) eelretsenseerimine.

A Traveling Fish 

Art Installation

Description and Concept

What if a fish could surf the Internet? What if a fish could travel through a city?

Taking into account the digital age paradigm that allows us to travel the world without leaving our living room or an office, we aim to allow a fish to do the same: to travel through various cities without leaving its aquarium. Hence, the audience are confronted with the familiar Google street view but from the perspective of fish and its navigation will. It means the center of artwork’s interaction is a fish and not a spectator. Instead the audience are invited to follow the immersive journey of a fish.

Moreover, since a fish lives in water, all the street views will be under the water. Hence, the audience will be able to discover familiar or discover new places but under the water and from the perspective and a will of a fish.

The idea is to make use of fishes’ traveling nature and twist it in the sense of digital age. Continuing with the point of information era, we are relating to the ideas of Marc Auge, who argues about excess of space, time, and ego nowadays. The artwork aims to demonstrate that even a fish is able to travel and be present in number of places. Thus, it will excess its ego, space and time similarly to people.

In addition to that, it is curious to relate to the famous quote and cartoon by Peter Steiner: on the internet, nobody knows you are a dog. Only in our case everyone will know that it is a fish, who is on internet and on Google street view. 

Regarding my research topic, which is unaware participation, through this installation I aim to explore how the day-to-day behavior of a fish could be applied for artistic purposes. Of course, whether a fish is aware or not of its role in the artwork is arguable.

Rahvusraamatukogu konverentsisaalis, Tõnismägi 2

Esmaspäeval, 20.01.2014 algusega kell 17.00 toimub Hobusepea galeriis (Hobusepea 2) kunsti ja disaini eriala doktorant Eva Seppingu doktoritöö “Rahvusliku ideoloogia kajastused 21. sajandi Eesti visuaalkultuuris” juurde kuuluva näituse “15 Minutes of Shame” eelretsenseerimine.

Doktoritöö juhendajad on prof dr Katrin Kivimaa ja dr Eva Piirimäe

Näituse eelretsensendid on dr Elo-Hanna Seljamaa ja Andres Kurg (MSc)

Eva Sepping on lõpetanud 2003. aastal Tartu Ülikooli lähiajaloo erialal, Eesti Kunstiakadeemia magistriõppe 2009. aastal interaktiivse multimeedia erialal ja on täiendanud end Prahas ning Bristolis. Hetkel õpib Sepping Eesti Kunstiakadeemia Doktorikoolis ja avatav näitus on osa tema doktoritööst. Algne idee teha näitus rahvuslikust või grupilisest haaratusest massiürituste näitel, mis autorile vaatemänguna ja emotsionaalselt mõjuvad huvipakkuvalt ja köitvalt, tekitab konflikti akadeemilisse konteksti asetatuna. Eva Sepping visualiseerib avatavas projektis akadeemilise keskkonna ja emotsionaalsuse vastuolulisust, luues enda sõnul ebakindla olukorra, kus eeldatavale poolele omistatav ratsionaalsus võib olla küsitav. Eva Sepping: “Mind huvitavad rahvuslikud massiüritused, nende vaatemängulisus sõltumata lipuvärvist ning isiklik osalus. Kuivõrd uurija positsioonist teadvustad ka nende rituaalide sisemisi hoovuseid, tekitab selline haaravus vastuolulisi tundeid, seda enam, et nende mõjust ei pääseks ka neis otseselt mitteosaledes. Võiks arvata, et neid etendusi naudib nö mass, kes pole sedasorti etenduste mehhanismidest teadlik. Aga mida teha ja kellena end määratleda, kui oled teadlik, aga ikka naudid? Vajuda maa alla?” 

Näitus jääb avatuks 20. jaanuarini 2014.

Eva Sepping has graduated from the department of contemporary history at the University of Tartu in 2003 and obtained a MA degree in the department of interactive multimedia at the Estonian Academy of Arts; she has also studied in Prague and Bristol. As the artist is currently acquiring a doctoral degree at the Estonian Academy of Arts the present exhibition serves as a part of her doctoral thesis. 

Eva Sepping was intially inspired by the idea of ethnicities or groups being carried away by various public events since the artist considered it as an emotionally intriguing and fascinating spectacle; however, in an academic context a conflict will arise. In her current art project, the artist visualizes the contradictoriness of academic environment and emotionality. She is creating an ambiguous situation where presumptive rationality can be questionable. 

Eva Sepping: „I am intrigued by ethnical public events, their spectacularity despite one’s national origin and personal participation. As a researcher, you also become aware of the inner stream of these rituals and the accompanying ravishment arises contradictory feelings. All the more – the influence cannot be escaped even when one is not directly taking part in the event. One could think that these spectacles are enjoyed by the crowd of people who are unaware of the mechanisms of such shows. What to do and how to define oneself when you are aware but despite that you still enjoy? To sink through the floor?“
